The Inaugural Address was meant to state to the south that lincoln would not take first blood against the seceding states. However, if they took force against the union, he would consider it a rebellion and strike with great force. This is relevant to our project because it showed that the president of the US was against the south’s decisions to recede and that he did not want slavery to continue.

In Alabama’s secession document it states the they are receding partially because they wanted to uphold the laws that promote slavery, where as Lincoln did not. They viewed him as a threat and left the union. This document supports our project because Alabama seceded due to laws that somewhat prohibited slavery.

This document describes a situation in a battle from the civil war about colored soldiers. They had 350 men and were ready to charge. One of the sergeants went down and another sergeant, grabbed the flag he was holding, now wielding two flags, and was then shot. He went down saying “Boys, save the colors!”. This shows how the civil war was really a war that determined the outcome of slavery in the United States. Slaves fought for the union because the union was against slavery.

This speech from Frederick Douglass states how he was a slave then escaped. It says how the common people simply gained independence from Great Britain. However, the speech also states that colored people did not gain freedom until much later than 1776.

Lincoln’s “A House Divided” speech was made when he was elected by republicans for state senate. It talked about how he did not believe that the government would stay united when half of the country was against slavery, the other half for it.

This letter has to do with our presentation because this document stated that african americans were able to fight in the war, however the generals in South Carolina at the time did not have the chance to get it. This relates to our topic because the slaves were fighting for equal rights and this was one of the opportunities for them to get freedom.
Lee, Robert E. "General Robert E. Lee’s “Lost Order” No. 191." Letter to HDQRS. ARMY OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA. 9 Sept. 1862. MS. Northern Virginia, Virginia.
The lost order that Lee had written out for more soldiers but none of them had come. Our topic relates to this because some of soldiers were again african american and they were fighting not only for their country but their freedom as well. This was sitting on the white man and the government very well.

The Democratic party of 1860 had to do with the freeing of the slaves because the democratic party wanted the slaves freed. They felt the cruelty of these human beings had gone on too far and they were trying to fight to get what they thought was right.

The Republican Party had a lot to do with the freeing of slaves for all the wrong reasons. They wanted slavery to be expanded into non-slave territories which was a negative towards the freeing slave society that the Democrats wanted. This made the process of getting African American rights a longer process.

Captain Whitmore had a whole army of african american slaves fighting in battlefields. This had a lot to do with the freeing of the slaves because the slaves were gaining their rights and fighting for what they believed in. This was some of the building blocks towards their independence.
