4th of July was a very important holiday to salves. It was a holiday that represented America's freedom. This also represented freedom for the slaves. They were no longer slaves they were free men and they could do whatever they wanted with their lives. They no longer had to listen to the white man. Fredrick Douglass' speech states that even though the white men had freedom, the slaves didn't gain their's until much later than 1776.
